Assigning Materials

Objective: Apply materials to the earrings for a professional look.

Set Up Materials

Download the custom materials from the RhinoArtisan course resources.

Add them to the KeyShot Materials folder:

• Navigate to Documents > KeyShot > Materials.
• Copy the downloaded materials folder (1).
• Extract the content of the downloaded folder (2).
• Open the extracted folder to find your new materials (3).

Find materials in Keyshot

Once copied, in Keyshot, we will see an update icon below the Materials panel.

If we click this button, we will notice that the RhinoArtisan material category now appears, with three different materials for Gold, Diamond, and Pearl.

The gold material is a multi-material, which means that within the same material, different variations are included—in this case, White, Yellow, and Rose gold

Apply Materials in KeyShot

Diamonds: Drag and drop the Gem Stone Diamond RA material onto one diamond.

Pearls: Drag and drop the Pearl RA material onto one pearl.

Metal:

• Expand the Scene panel to view sublayers (e.g., Metal01 and Metal03).
• Drag the Gold Three Colors material onto these layers.

For the metal, we will assign the material in a different way. We will drag the ‘Three-Color Gold’ material to the Scene panel, where the elements are listed, and drop it onto the Metal01 layer.

Do the same for the Metal03 layer. By doing this, we are assigning the same material but can manage it independently. If we modify the color of one layer, it won’t affect the other layer that contains the same material.

If we assign the material by dragging and dropping it directly onto the objects in the scene, any modifications will reflect the same change in both layers.
Let’s change one of the gold colors to see that the other layer does not get modified.
We move the cursor over one of the baskets (1) of our earrings and double-click.

In the Project panel, we will see that the properties of the ‘Three-Color Gold’ (2) material have opened, showing its variations: White, Yellow, and Rose (3).
